Southern Pipe  was founded in 1967 as a joint-venture between Malaysia entrepreneurs and JFE Steel and Itochu Corp. It became an associate of Southern Steel in 1987 through the merger with Southern Steel's pipe operation and became its subsidiary in 1989. It has since then grown to become a leading pipe manufacturer in the country producing a wide range of welder pipes. Southern Pipe is one of the few pipe makers in the world that employs the latest state of the art in line galvanizing process that incorporates a hot dip galvanizing process into the tube making line. The advantage of this technology is the triple coat systems that provide superior corrosion resistance quality with smooth, shining and flexible coating that allow bending and forming. The flagship brands produced by this technology are Smartube Electrical Conduit Pipe and UltraGal, the low weight high strength in line galvanized pipe. Southern Pipe also has a wholly owned subsidiary, Southern Steel Pipe SdnBhd, which mainly involved in export markets.

Today, the pipe group consists of two steel pipe factories in Malaysia, with a combine annual sales revenue of over USD100 million and an annual capacity that exceeds 200,000mt. The many certifications garnered through the years are testament of the companies’ commitment in providing only the best products and services. Among others, it has the distinction of being the first steel mill in the country to be awarded the ISO 9001:2000 certification. The group’s product lines were being exported to countries all over the world.
